Scenes of devastation & destruction....

Yesterday at lunch, My she-bro Jen was telling how much damaged they sustained at their house during the recent storm. I was concerned, becuase there was a TON of damage around the area...trucks blown over, even a train blown off the track in Ohio....but OMG, that is nothing compared to the wasteland that is Jen's house...I drove by and was just speechless...here's a pic...

Can't see it? Let me zoom in a bit closer for you....

No, still can't see it.....here, I'll circle it for you.....

Yup, as 10s of thousands are without power, signs are down...Jen is suffering from, what can only be described as near armaggedon by the ONE tree branch that fell.

I hear The Weather Channel will be sending a crew by to do a segment for their "When Weather Changed the World" series.

Recent Politics...

On the subject of the much anticipated "rebate", does anyone really think this is going to help anyone.

First of all, does everyone realize that this is money that we would have gotten back in 2009 anyway (most of us)....but instead we get it now. The benefit is all the Chinese....if you didn't know, our govt can't afford to cover the rebate, so they'll be borrowing the $150b from the Chinese!!!!

Second, if you want to help us short term & long term, think ENERGY. Short term - Remove oil futures from the market, nearly 30% (some say 50%) of the cost of a barrel of oil is inflated by investors speculating on the commodity. Then, set one national standard for fuel...no longer allow each state to regulate the specific fuel it wants, forcing the gas companies to mfg 100 grades of gasoline.

Long term - Open the gulf to drilling, it's out there, someone (China) is going to take it, so we might as well get it. Then allow the construction of new refinaries. According to my buddy John, we are now not only importing oil, but gasoline, becuase when we get the oil, we don't have enough resources to refine it into gas. We haven't built a new refinary in almost 30 years.

Also long-term, get off coal, and switch the entire countries electricity grid to Nuclear, and build new plants...now.

Also long-term, offer a $10m reward to the first inventor that can produce a electric car that doesn't look and run like a match box.

On other political news, everyone's all excited for Obama because the Kennedy clan has come out and endorsed him. In his comments, he said he was so touched to be linked to a man that has done so much.......what the hell has Ted Kennedy done? Does this mean Obama has now got to go drowned a girl off of Cape Cod?

I weep for this year's election, as of right now, there isn't ANYONE I fee like I can support....I just have to decide who I fear the least!

I was just telling someone..you can find ANTHING on the internet....

For those of you who don't know...I'm a huge addict of The Weather Channel. When I was recovering after surgey, I could put it on, and the repetitious broadcast, combined with the "Local on the 8's" music was the perfect "white noise" to go to sleep by.

In fact, the only thing I hate about my new direct TV, is that we don't get a true "Local on the 8's"...you get that same national crap you get in a hotel room.....but you do still get the cool music....which brings me to the point of this email.

Now available....."The Weather Channel presents Smooth Jazz".....it's the music they use during the "Local on the 8's" segments, and it the top 12 mosted requested songs by Weather Channel viewers....damn, and Christmas is already over.

Random news observations....

We all saw the video of Hillary nearly breaking down on the campaign trail because it is so hard...well looks like Bill has been burning it at both ends too...check out the video of him sleeping during a sermon given in honor of MLK...oh, and the sermon was being given by MLK's son...http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/22783017#22783017

Locally, it is now against the rules for anyone to hold a function in a Shelby County buidling unless it directly relates to county business, and is not a religous event. I'm sure Henri Brooks will find a loop hole for that, and have another Kwanzaa event there.

So Willie and AC had a private "sit down" with the Gov about consolidation. The date was picked, plans were made...and just before the meeting, the Gov asked for a summary of the planned meeting so he could be prepared....well, when it turned out Willie and AC didn't have a plan, the meeting was canceled. I guess the Gov doesn't have time to listen to Willie rant aimlessly about how things should be done his way.

And, as the economy in Memphis continues to tank...two new reports in DeSoto look good. The average income is up, and is higher than the national average. Also, our sales revenues continue to grow despite the economic slow down.

Did you see the anti-MLK parade in the news this week. After legally obtaining a permit, several hundred demonstrators marched in protest of MLK being a federal holiday. They were peaceful, and maintained order.....however, several MLK supporters had to be arrested after trying to interfere with the parade, and refusing to allow freedom of speech.

Speaking of freedom of speech, if you haven't seen the Tom Cruise Scientology video..it is a must see. And while you're on YouTube, search for Scientology Crazy Followers....truly some scary people. One important note in Tom's little video, when he refers to SPs, that's you and me. And when he says he hopes for the day when the only time you will here about SPs is in the history books, that means he either wants the world converted to Scientology, or eliminated. Thank you Tom "Osama" bin Cruise.

Explaining Taxes and Tax Cuts in a way we can ALL understand

Much nonsense has come from the Dems about how the wealthiest Americans get bigger benefits from tax cuts. What they want to do is increase the taxes on the rich, and reduce the tax rate on the poor....so let's take a look how this works.....shall we?

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that's what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. 'Since you are all such good customers, he said, 'I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20. Drinks for
the ten now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share?' They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.!

And so:

The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings. 'I only got a dollar out of the $20,'declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,' but he got $10!'

'Yeah, that's right,' exclaimed the fifth man. 'I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got ten times more than I!' 'That's true!!' shouted the seventh man. 'Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!'

'Wait a minute,' yelled the first four men in unison. 'We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!'

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so just the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much,
attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.
